In the Spring of 2016, an historic neon sign on Colorado Blvd. pointing the way to the Pasadena Playhouse went dark. This sign was installed in 1935 on Green Street. Later on, it was moved to its current location on Colorado Blvd./Route 66. It is the last remaining historical neon sign in the designated Playhouse District.
The Friends wrote and submitted a request to James King, Grand 3rd VP, San Miguel Parlor #150 for funding for its repair. Our request was presented at the NSGW Historical Preservation Foundation in Sonoma, at the Bear Flag Celebration. The reception was enthusiastic and very positive. On June 16, Gilmor Brown’s birthday, the check for $600 was personally delivered by Joe Castillo, Grand Trustee, Rio Hondo Parlor #294.
We are thrilled to receive this grant to help with this repair and are looking forward to placing a commemorative plaque at the site of The Pasadena Playhouse’s Historical Neon Sign acknowledging its significance and the part played by the Native Sons of the Golden West. The Friends thank them for their assistance and for recognizing our sign’s historical value. |
