There is a lyric from an obscure Broadway musical called Applause that states "When you've got good Friends you've got a good life. Think about that!"

There is absolutely no doubt that life at the Pasadena Playhouse is made not just good, but so much better by our wonderful FRIENDS organization.

This group of passionate theatre lovers serves the theatre in so many vital and important ways.  They bring joy, expertise, skill, intelligence and (perhaps most important) a genuine love of the art and craft of the theatre to everything that they do.

Their deep affection, dare I say love, of the Pasadena Playhouse is quite palpable to all who know them well, and even apparent to those who are visiting our theatre for the first time.

Truly they are our "ambassadors of good will" and they spread their many charms to our audiences, to the artists who work here, to the staff and among themselves. Our good FRIENDS certainly help to make the Pasadena Playhouse the very beautiful and very special theatre that it has been for years, and I have no doubt that they will continue to serve the Playhouse in that way for years.

Our  Mission
The Friends of the Pasadena Playhouse support and advance the Pasadena Playhouse, the State Theater of California, by providing volunteer services to sustain the theater, communicate to the community and our membership the quality and value of the Playhouse and engage in collaborative efforts to honor and protect its history and reputation.

Vision Statement
  • To be a vital and welcoming organization that supports the Pasadena Playhouse.
  • To encourage community involvement in the Friends’ activities.
  • To invite members of all ages to step into leadership positions.
  • To cherish and protect the history of the Playhouse.
  • To engage young people in the theater arts and advance their educational aspirations.

Our History
Early in 1979 a small notice appeared in the newspaper requesting that anyone interested in assisting with the reopening of the Pasadena Playhouse attend a meeting. Over 80 people showed up for the meeting held at Ambassador College. That was the beginning of the Friends of the Pasadena Playhouse.

What we do
Since then, the organization has grown to about 300 volunteers who usher, feed a cast and production crew, help with mailings, maintain the Playhouse Archives, give tours and assist with many other services required by the theatre. The dollar value of the total volunteer hours for 2019-2021 is   $1,524,767.17.

While they are not a fundraising group, in recent years they have raised a substantial amount of money to help the Playhouse. The Friends have purchased two sets of washing machines and dryers, computers and microphones for the box office, a dust collection system for a shop, refrigerators for various areas of the theatre, a color copier, a special Canon camera, new benches, a 24  Loop-Receivers (hearing devices) with  Head Phones and as well as many other items. They have donated money for special events like an annual Gala, The Hot House, Diversity Project, Student Matinees. They also have raised money for items such as new seats, carpeting, ,   the day-to-day running costs of The Playhouse. In 2015, the total of donations given by the Friends was over $35,000.
